What's that one thing you've been waiting for? Do you believe your breakthrough is coming?
It wasn't until last year that I learned the definition of the word, "advent." It was a word I had taken for granted growing up in a Christian household. But all religious practices set aside, advent, when applied more broadly, can denote expectations, a long awaited arrival, excitement, hope. The term itself comes to us from Latin meaning, "coming."
As of late, I feel myself clinging to the idea of hope and radical expectations. Turn on any news station or read the latest headline, and you cannot help but feel that our world needs a new direction driven by hope. And what about within the context of our personal lives? Is there a lifelong dream you've held but haven't acted upon? Are you plotting your next career move but fear is paralyzing you? Are there any relationships or actions that are no longer bearing fruit, and something needs to change?
Whatever the case may be; I'm never one to wait until New Years to adopt a resolution or higher standard for my life. We are by no means in control of all our circumstances, but we can control how we perceive them and manage them with skill. Let's begin with our minds and choose to renew our hope. Let's cultivate high expectations again, as if our breakthroughs are just around the corner.
Now, where to begin? Rather than overwhelming ourselves, let's take small, tangible actions each day to change the trajectory of our lives and renew our expectations. It can be as simple as:
- an unexpected gesture for a friend (flowers, coffee, an appreciative text)
- speaking words of encouragement over yourself (the mind is a powerful thing and will believe what you feed it)
- research a new career field or business venture
- take a class, learn a new skill
- rest or meditate (some of our best ideas come in moments of stillness)
- choose to hope daily and expect the results to fall into place (you have to convince yourself that it will all be okay- because in the end, it will be)
These are just some ideas to chart a new course and adopt a different point of view. I would love to hear your thoughts on this and if this was of any benefit to you. Leave me a comment or like - I would love to see what you all are hoping and expecting for. Keep me posted!
